Domain Names represent an essential asset for businesses and individuals. In this article, we will share five items to be considered when registering a domain name.

2- Ensure That Your Domain Name is Registered in Your Name
The rule is simple, register your domains by yourself. If you have to work with a third party (agency, consultant, freelancer, etc) to register your domain, ask them to use your information during the registration process (NOT their information) to avoid any troubles in the future. The WHOIS information identifies to whom the domain belongs.
3- Do Not Forget to Renew it
A domain name is registered for a specific period of time, usually one year. In some cases, we can register a domain name for 2 years, 3 years, etc. Usually your provider (registrar) will send you reminder notifications before the domain expiry date. Ensure that you get these notifications (especially if you have a thirtd party entity who takes care of your domain registration related tasks).
Usually, you can enable auto-renewal and have the payments processed automatically by your registrar. But you have to ensure that you know what pricing do you have to pay for renewal. Usually, providers attract new customers with very low first registration price and switch to the regular renewal price which can represent 20 times the initial price in some cases (Example, register a domain for $1 and renew it for $20).

4- Protect Your Identity With The Whois Privacy (ID Protection)
Whois Privacy is an additional service offered with your domain. It will mask your contact information on the Whois database so that it is not freely available. Anyone wishing to contact you will not be able to do so directly, but will instead have to fill out a form that will be forwarded on to the admin contact email address for the domain.
Some registrars include the Whois Privacy feature for FREE with the domain name.Others charge an extra FEE (Around $5 - $12 per year).
